Every once in a while, you will meet an entrepreneur who has both dreams and dedication. This is the experience I gained at the pioneering conference in Vienna a few weeks ago, when I met with Alex Zhavoronkov, founder and CEO of Insilo Medicine. During the meeting, he introduced how to use a set of deep learning artificial intelligence tools to resist aging. He also told me that I can live forever because I am young enough to benefit from the technology he is developing.

Frankly, I am very skeptical about this (especially when deep learning is abused), but after talking to him, I think that humans may really be able to master and control aging.

This belief in the company's mission is also reflected in today's many statements. The company announced today that it has completed a round of strategic financing led by China's comprehensive R&D service platform WuXi PharmaTech and BOLD Capital and Pavilion Capital, a subsidiary of Singapore's Temasek subsidiary Peter Diamandis. In addition, the company also announced a strategic partnership with WuXi PharmaTech, after which Insilico's invention will be tested by WuXi PharmaTech. According to Crunchbase, the terms of this round of financing have not been disclosed, but Insilo has previously raised $14 million in financing from investors.

In order to understand the company's technology, we need to know more about how therapies are developed. In the classic model used by pharmaceutical companies, scientists at the R&D lab look at the molecules that are naturally present while looking for potential therapeutic ingredients. When they find a molecule that might be a candidate, they begin a series of tests to determine the therapeutic effects of these molecules (and get FDA approval).

What Insilo did was not to advance the process, but to achieve reversal. The company had a final goal from the beginning, such as stopping aging, and then using the deep learning algorithm toolbox to redesign the ideal numerator. These molecules may not exist anywhere in the world, but can be "made" in the lab.

The company's key underlying technology is the so-called GANs, a generation of adversarial networks with enhanced learning capabilities. At a high level, GANs include a neural network "generator" that creates new products (in this case, molecules), and a discriminator that classifies new products. These neural networks are then adopted over time to compete more effectively.

GANs have been used to make fake photos that look almost real, even if they have never been taken. Zhavoronkov said that maybe one day, we can also produce clinical patient data. This approach can provide more data while protecting patient privacy.

Although Zhavoronkov has a bold dream of conquering aging, today the company is more focused on creating a new set of molecules that can provide new treatments. As the company's new strategic partner, WuXi PharmaTech will adopt these new molecules and test their effectiveness in the actual clinical environment.

With the development of the company's technology, Zhavoronkov hopes to provide a "longevity and service" engine that can promote global longevity research through deep learning. This means that the company will provide a platform for researchers to find new molecules, determine which molecules are likely to be the most promising treatments, and then put them into clinical trials for practical clinical practice.

Although Zhavoronkov is the CEO, his primary status is a researcher. While leading a laboratory of 52 researchers, he also widely published his and team findings. He hopes that the underlying research being carried out by the team can be commercialized into industry and eventually acquired by the world's largest pharmaceutical giant.

Although it may be too early, Zhavoronkov has great ambitions for Insilo to stop the aging potential. Even if these dreams are difficult to achieve, the technologies built along the way may fundamentally change our pharmaceutical product line to provide a mitigation solution for various diseases.
