In the United States, the number of strokes among older people aged 85 and older is increasing year by year, and patients in this group are at higher risk of leaving their disabilities. In the elderly population aged 85 and older, stroke is the leading cause of disability. Although the available information is extremely limited, we still need to clarify the prognosis of this age group after rehabilitation. Therefore, O'Brien et al. from Nazareth College in the United States designed relevant research and will study in order to clarify the functional recovery and discharge after rehabilitation in rehabilitation institutions in elderly patients aged 85 years and older. The results were published in the online journal of Phys Ther February 2016. This study is a cross-sectional study. The investigator's data was obtained from the patient assessment database of the inpatient rehabilitation facility. The data they collected were 5.5 years after 2002 and a total of 71,625 subjects were included. The functional status of these patients at discharge was assessed by the Functional Independence Scale, which is the patient's return to the community. The researchers divided patients into different age groups (85-89 years, 90-94 years, 95-99 years, and 100 years old and above) to observe differences in functional independence scores and discharge prognosis assessments in different age groups. Later, the investigators also assessed the association between different degrees of prognosis and patient age groups. In the 5.5 years observed by the investigators, the average functional independence score at discharge was reduced by 3.6 points, and the rate of returning to the community was reduced by 5.5%. Approximately 54% of the subjects eventually returned to the community. The limitation of this paper is that the nature of this study is observational research, and the results can only suggest possible causes. Since the provider of rehabilitation therapy was not defined in this study, it may affect the results of this study.
