According to a Xinhua News Agency, a study published in the British Journal of Biomedical Centers and Public Health on the 13th showed that people who sleep less than 6 hours or more than 10 hours a day are more likely to suffer from various metabolic syndromes.

The study covered 130,000 Korean men and women between the ages of 40 and 69 who submitted blood, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and urine samples for a physical examination and answered questions about sleep duration. Among the subjects, nearly 11% of men and 13% of women slept less than 6 hours a day, and 1.5% of men and 1.7% of women slept more than 10 hours a day.

A data analysis by researchers at Seoul National University Medical School found that people who slept less than 6 hours a day had a thicker waist circumference than those who slept 6 to 7 hours a day, and the chances of men suffering from metabolic syndrome increased; Among the 10 hours of people, both men and women are more likely to suffer from metabolic syndrome, high triglycerides, women may have thicker waist, higher blood sugar levels, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the so-called "good cholesterol" level is low. .

Although the biological mechanisms behind the association between sleep time and metabolic syndrome are unclear, scientists have identified several physiological processes that may affect this. For example, people who sleep less than 7 hours a day secrete more hormones that promote appetite and calorie intake or reduce energy expenditure, so they are more likely to gain weight.

However, the researchers also pointed out that this is an observational study. The statistics of sleep duration are based on self-reported data rather than objective measurement data, and no causal conclusions can be drawn.
