Texas Instruments (TI) announced the first product in its fully integrated Analog Front End (AFE) family to meet the needs of portable and high-end electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalography (EEG) devices, patient monitoring and consumer medical applications. With an efficiency of 1 mW per channel, the 8-channel 24-bit ADS1298 delivers 95% reduction in component count and power consumption compared to discrete solutions, while enabling customers to achieve the highest diagnostic accuracy.

Art George, senior vice president of TI's high-performance analog business unit, said: "Previously, high-power large-scale design solutions limited the portability of ECG and EEG equipment. Manufacturers can use the low power consumption and high integration of the ADS1298 to develop low A compact, portable device that's easy to carry, conceal, and wear, making it easier for doctors to monitor critical parameters over time, improving patient comfort while increasing the accuracy of clinical data."

Key features and benefits of the ADS1298
• Integrates all the common features required for ECG and EEG front ends (as follows) to simplify design and save board space, with a 95% drop in component usage:
o 8 low noise programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs);
o 8 high resolution simultaneous sampling ADCs;
o The right leg drives the integrated amplifier;
o Integrated amplifiers for the Wilson Center Terminal (WCT) and Goldberger Terminals (GCT);
o digital pace detection function;
o Continuously initiate testing;
o Onboard oscillators and references enable low power applications in smaller sizes.
• 1 mW per channel, reducing power consumption by up to 95% compared to stand-alone implementations, increasing device portability and patient monitoring mobility;
• The 4-DSVpp (typ) input reference noise of the ADS1298 far exceeds the limits of the IEC60601-2-27/51 standard, improving the measurement accuracy of portable devices and high-density high-end ECG and EEG equipment;
• The low-power TMS320C5505 DSP family is the leading low-power solution for complementary analog front ends. The TMS320C5505 consumes less than 0.15 mW/MHz, maximizing battery life in portable patient monitoring applications. These devices, in conjunction with TI's full line of analog signal chain and power management solutions, provide customers with a complete ECG and EEG application signal chain to accelerate time-to-market.

The highly integrated, full-series, four- and six-channel versions provide designers with an upgrade path for a variety of resolutions and channel combinations for low-noise medical applications, including patient monitoring, rest and load ECG, fetal monitoring, Hospital and civil automated external defibrillators [AED], etc., as well as consumer medical applications such as exercise fitness monitors.
