The faces of identical twins are almost the same, and the faces of siblings are very similar to those of irrelevant people. Obviously, facial morphology is regulated by genes. Recently, an international research team identified five genes that determine facial morphology. The related paper was published in the September 13 issue of PLoS Genetics. To identify genes that determine facial morphology, approximately 10,000 people from different countries with European descent participated in the study. The researchers used three-dimensional head MRI and two-dimensional portraits to characterize facial features, and then used GWA (genome-wide association) to find the DNA associated with facial morphology. Finally, the researchers identified five genes, PRDM16, PAX3, TP63, C5orf50, and COL17A1, three of which are involved in cranial development and disease. Professor Manfred Kayser, the leader of the study, said that in the future we might draw his portrait based on the DNA left by someone, which would be very helpful in criminal investigation and evidence collection, and now it is possible to accurately target eyes and hair based on DNA. The color is predicted.
