According to foreign media reports, the British National Health Service (NHS) is testing a medical chat robot software, hoping to replace the existing non-emergency hotline. It is reported that this software is developed by the British startup Babylon, it will understand the patient's condition through question and answer and then give corresponding advice - whether to go to the doctor, or let it recover. According to a report in the Financial Times (FT), the software plans to start a six-month trial in parts of London from the end of this month, when more than 1.2 million people will participate.

The NHS's non-emergency hotline 111 is different from emergency services, the operator is not a medical professional, and it costs up to $20 per call for the NHS, and the entire process takes about 10 minutes to complete. This high-cost, low-efficiency mode of operation has been criticized by the UK's national health care authority, the Quality of Care Committee, which says help-seekers are often hanged up by operators or receive inappropriate medical advice.

Babylon hopes to change the situation, it will use the artificial intelligence-driven chat robot to classify the helper's condition and make a reasonable opinion, instead of acting as a layman to provide medical diagnosis. The average communication time between the helper and the robot is about one and a half minutes, and the number of questions and answers on both sides can be up to 12. Babylon CEO Ali Parsa told FT that although their agreement with NHS would be “significant” in cost savings, they did not give exact figures in the agreement.

This is not the first time that Babylon has worked with NHS. They have worked together on another service software, Essex. Users can use this software to launch video medical consultation. The company said that 20% of patients who had undergone a surgical procedure had used Essex, which helped them reduce the number of trips to the emergency room and clinic. In addition, video medical consultations support patients living outside the doctor's service area, with a one-time service fee of £25, and a monthly fee of only £5.
