About Norovirus
Norovirus is an RNA virus of the family of the Calicivirus family. They are probably the most common cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks around the world, and can cause 50% of outbreaks of foodborne gastroenteritis in the Western world. Norovirus affects people of all ages. This virus spreads through contaminated food or water, human-to-human contact, and through atomization and subsequent contamination of the surface. Infectious doses can be as low as 10–100 viral particles, which are stable in the environment.
The most common food types associated with Norovirus outbreaks are shellfish, salad ingredients, and non-nuclear fruits such as strawberries (such as frozen berries). A recent study found that 76% of British-grown oysters are contaminated with Norovirus. Except for shellfish, most food is contaminated by food processors.
Typical Norovirus assays have electron microscopy or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays that are not suitable for testing food matrices and contaminated surfaces. Due to the low infectious dose, the detection limit must be less than 1,000 viral particles, none of which are available. The MMB Real-Time Fluorescence PCR Kit detects small amounts of viral RNA quickly and with high sensitivity. The detection limit is less than 50 RNA copies based on food matrix, RNA preparation and RNA content.
Norovirus infection
Norovirus infection causes acute gastroenteritis (stomach and intestinal inflammation) and usually includes symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, severe vomiting and abdominal pain. The infection usually lasts for 24-48 hours and heals itself. However, some people are especially young, and the elderly and people with other diseases may have problems with dehydration. Outbreaks of Norovirus often occur in closed or semi-enclosed communities, such as long-term care facilities, overnight camps, hospitals, prisons, dormitories, and cruise ships. The range of infections spreads very quickly from person to person or through contaminated food.
