IDC Models recently made an advanced research and development contribution to the field of pill robots. The micro device can enter a designated target area in the human intestine, which is difficult to treat in a conventional manner.

Developed by Stephen Woods and Tim Constandinou of Imperial College, the pill robot uses the simplest mechanical combination of one pill to provide 1 ml of medication. The pill naturally flows to the smallest intestine of the patient after swallowing. The path of movement of the pill in the human body is tracked by the medical staff. When the pill reaches the target area, the operator sends a remote control signal to the pill robot, prompting the robot to extend its pinch and fix it in a designated area in the intestine. The medical staff can instruct the pill robot to inject the drug directly into the area. The device is believed to be effective in controlling intestinal diseases such as intestinal cancer or Crohn's disease in the small intestine.

Imperial College of Science and Technology is eager to showcase the prototype of this innovative invention to the medical community. It is hard to find a company like IDC that can provide such micro-precision model making technology. Peter Pendergast, head of IDC Models, explains, “The overall size of the pill is only 30 mm by 11 mm, so you can imagine the fineness of the attached robot structure combined with the pill size. We work closely with Stephen Woods of Imperial College. The robot structure, IDC's SLA machine produces parts with an overall size of only 1.75mm2." SLA rapid prototyping machine, using 3D printing, modeled by rare hardened liquid resin. The fabrication process involves cutting a CAD model into a section that is scanned by a high power laser and scanned onto the surface of the liquid resin. The laser-swept liquid resin area is gradually hardened and shaped, and the final model is formed by multi-layer laser scanning. IDC's SLA rapid prototyping machine produces micro-components with an accuracy of ±0.05 mm.
