The National Longevity Medical Research Center of Japan successfully extracted the unique exercise pattern of Alzheimer's disease from the “tap movement” of the thumb and index finger of both hands. Among them, the finger tapping motion analysis technology developed by Hitachi is used. The goal is to detect Alzheimer's disease early.

Study finger tapping

Magnetic sensor type finger tapping device

The National Longevity Medical Research Center of Japan and Hitachi began clinical trials for the early detection of Alzheimer's disease in 2013. Severe patients with Alzheimer's disease have the characteristic of "the slow response of the left and right brains to the sound." According to this, the center measured the movement of the thumb and forefinger of both hands using Hitachi's "magnetic sensor type finger tapping device". Utilizing Hitachi's technical analysis of the measurement results, the unique movement pattern of Alzheimer's disease was extracted from the tapping motion of the thumb and forefinger of both hands.

Hitachi has developed an analysis technique that captures a variety of features based on the measured output waveform of a finger tapping motion, and has been provided to the National Longevity Medical Research Center of Japan. Using this analysis technique, it is possible to calculate not only the 21 basic feature quantities of the magnetic sensor type finger tapping device, but also the 23 feature quantities such as the contact time of the two fingers and the similarity of the left and right hand motion waveforms.
