Diagnostic information service provider Quest Diagnostics recently announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted the company a rapid detection of Zika virus (Zika virus RNA qualitative real-time RT-PCR test, Zika RT-PCR test) Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). The test was developed by a reference laboratory of Quest's Focus Diagnostics to qualitatively detect RNA from Zika virus in individual serum samples. It is worth mentioning that this is the first time that the Zika virus detection developed by a commercial laboratory provider has obtained an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). EUA refers to the use of unapproved pharmaceutical products by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under actual or potential emergency conditions and the unauthorized use of approved products. At present, the Zika virus epidemic continues to wreak havoc in countries such as Brazil, and US health officials have warned that the outbreak may break out in the United States. It can be said that the FDA granted commercial Zika RT-PCR to detect the critical moment of EUA. Prior to this, the FDA only granted the Zika tester EUA developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and was limited to use by qualified laboratories designated by the CDC. A new commercial test can screen more patients and identify individuals infected with the Zika virus earlier. Quest Diagnostics has plans to offer this new test extensively to medical institutions in the United States and Puerto Rico on May 2. The EUA is also the second EUA harvested by the Diagnostic Test Method for Emergency Infectious Diseases developed by Focus Diagnostics. In 2009, the FDA first granted the company a commercial laboratory test method, EUA, for the 2009 H1N1 flu virus test. Quest is also not the only company that develops Zika virus detection. In March of this year, Chembio Diagnostics said it is developing a POC (point-of-care) Zika detection technology with the Brazilian biotechnology organization BioManguinhos/Fiocrus, which helps scientists better understand Zika virus and microcephaly. The link between the two has been very encouraging and preliminary results have been harvested.
